Recipe: Layered Meat and Potato Casserole
Introduction: This hearty and comforting casserole features layers of creamy mashed potatoes and seasoned ground meat, all topped with melted cheese. It’s perfect for a family dinner or meal prep for the week.
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef or ground lamb
4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup heavy cream or milk
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)
1/4 cup tomato paste
Olive oil for cooking
Instructions:
Cook the Potatoes: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the cubed potatoes and cook until tender (about 15 minutes). Drain and return them to the pot. Mash with butter, cream (or milk), salt, and pepper until smooth. Set aside.
Prepare the Meat: In a skillet, heat a little olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic, cooking until softened. Add the ground meat and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat. Stir in tomato paste, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for a few minutes.
Assemble the Casserole: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a baking dish, spread a layer of mashed potatoes on the bottom. Then add a layer of the cooked meat mixture. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used up, finishing with a layer of mashed potatoes on top.
Add the Cheese: Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the top layer of potatoes.
Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy a delicious and satisfying meal!
